CBSE to introduce English novels from class IX

The Central Board of Secondary Education is aiming to foster reading habits in students by introducing novels for classes IX-XII. With this attempt, more emphasis will be laid on teaching language skills rather than merely providing verbose notes which makes studies monotonous and mundane.

This attempt of CBSE would nurture reading habits among students of Classes XI and XII as well as among students who are a part of the Formative Assessment in CCE of Classes IX and X.

 As per the revised guidelines of the curriculum in English language, CBSE has introduced the following novels for students of Classes IX to XII (w.e.f. 2012-13 for classes IX and XI and w.e.f. 2013-14 for classes X and XII)

CBSE organizes “The 2nd CBSE-TERI GREEN Olympiad”

‘The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI)’ has been conducting the ‘GREEN Olympiad’ since 1999 and attracts participation from lakhs of school students across India and abroad.

The ‘GREEN Olympiad’ aims to test the knowledge of students in the field of environment and in turn create awareness about issues touching their daily lives. The purpose of this event is to improve and expand the scope of environment education both at the national and international level and to develop human resources, institutional infrastructure and a diverse mixture of locale-specific, regional and national action plans to sensitize schools on the need for environmental protection.

Important points to note:

• A minimum of 20 students from a school are required to register the school for the examination.
• The examination is open to students of classes VIII-X only.
• The examination can be taken either in English or in Hindi.
• The examination will be held on 25 August 2012 and 29 September 2012.
• The last date for receiving the duly filled registration forms is 23 July 2012.

CBSE launches post-results counselling helpline

An important piece of information for those feeling anxious after the results. CBSE has launched a post-results counselling helpline that will be operational from today for students and parents who are looking for guidance pertaining to the Board results.

The tele-counselling helpline is an outreach programme that will also help students and parents overcome the post-result stress.

Students can dial a toll free number - 1800 180 3456 - from any part of the country between 8am and midnight and get in touch with the counsellors. The helpline will be active for the next 15 days.

CBSE students may now get a chance to apply directly to foreign universities

The Central Board of Secondary Education is introducing the CBSE-International curriculum in 100 affiliated schools in India from the academic session 2013. The program is already being implemented in several schools across Singapore, Oman, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Japan and is long due to be implemented in India as well.

The CBSE-i curriculum follows the international pattern and will do away with the need to opt for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program or the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) for students aspiring to go abroad after completing their class XIIth in India. The curriculum incorporates subjects like visual arts, performing arts, research, life skills and physical education besides language, science and social science. Seems like CBSE, through this program, is also looking towards the all-round holistic development of the students and not just focusing on their academic progress.

CBSE-i has been a success internationally and now, with over 350 Indian schools having expressed their interest to join the program, students here should also be able to be a part of this program soon.

This is an important step taken by CBSE to promote world-class education in India. Incorporating the program in all the schools will be significant in bringing the Indian school curriculum at par with that followed worldwide.

CBSE X results to be declared on 1st June 2011!

Wait for thousands of CBSE class X students is finally over! CBSE class X results for Delhi & Chennai regions have already been announced on May 31, 2011. CBSE class X results for Panchkula, Ajmer and Allahabad regions will be declared on June 1, 2011 at 4 pm. Students from Bhubaneswar and Guwahati regions can access their results on CBSE’s official website on June 4, 2011.

CBSE’s decision to do away with board exams got an overwhelming response from students this year as more than 67% of the students opted for School conducted SA-II over Board conducted SA-II. The class X results declared by CBSE will include the results of both School conducted SA-II and Board conducted SA-II. The results by CBSE will include grades scored by students in Formative Assessments, Summative Assessments & co-scholastic activities.

Students can access their results on internet, through IVRS & by sending an SMS.

It is time for all those students who appeared for their class X exams to put on their thinking caps and decide about their subject choices for class XI. It is a very crucial time for students. Selecting the right subject at the right time is always beneficial as it is rightly quoted “a stitch in time saves nine”. CBSE notes – A key to secure better marks

There is no one way to study. Some students go through the whole syllabus while preparing for exams while some students choose to just go through the key points. For some scoring good marks in exams is still a dream. The experts recommend preparing notes for each subject as it is an easy way to score high marks in all subjects. 10th CBSE

CBSE 10th class students of the current academic year are among the early beneficiaries of the Continuous & Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system introduced by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Unlike the students in the previous batches, the students studying in CBSE 10th class have the option of not appearing for the board exams. They can do so by opting for CCE – an assessment system that is based on round-the-year, inclusive evaluation. Under CCE, students are required to take two summative and four formative assessments that may include paper-pencil tests along with other formative assessments tools such as classroom quizzes, projects  etc. However, the students who wish to appear for board exams have to send in their requisition to their respective schools stating that they want to appear for Summative Assessment-II conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education.

Grading Pattern & Assessment System under CCE

As mentioned above, students who have opted for CCE have to appear for summative & formative assessments on the basis of which students will be graded for their performance. The entire academic year of CBSE 10th class is divided into two semesters. For the current academic year, a weightage of 40% is being attached to the first semester where as the second semester carries a 60% weightage. However, from next academic year both semesters will carry equal weightage i.e. 50% each. The grading system adopted by CBSE is based on a 9 point scale. Students who score between 91-100 marks will be awarded grade A1, where as students who score between 81-90, 71-80, 61-70, 51-60, 41-50, 33-40, 21-32 & 20 and below will be awarded grades A2, B1, B2, C1, C2, D, E1 & E2 respectively. With each grade certain grade points are also awarded, for example students who score an A1 grade will be awarded 10 grade points, a student with A2 grade will get 9 grade points so on and so forth. No grade points shall be awarded for grades E1 & E2. Grade points in each subject will be accumulated and a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) will be arrived at.

Through the introduction of CCE attempts have been made to engage the students throughout the year in activities that will help strengthen their learning , facilitate better understanding of concepts and will make the entire experience enriching. CBSE 10th class students will appear for Summative Assessment-I in the month of September and Summative Assessment-II in months of February-March.

With Summative Assessment-II a few months away, it is time that CBSE 10th & 9th class students brace up for these final exams. CBSE’s recent initiative to make class 10 board exams optional is the talk of the town. The introduction of Grading System along with the continuous and comprehensive evaluation, intends to make students lives easier. So, all the students who are to appear in their class 10 CBSE board exams from the academic year 2010-11 have an option to choose from!

In order to make studying a stress-free experience for students, CBSE regularly introduces reforms in its examination and evaluation processes. And the introduction of the grading system is considered as a step ahead in these reforms. CBSE understands its responsibility to deliver an atmosphere and a system to its students that is conducive for them to intellectually grow and maintain their pace in the extra curricular activities. Besides conducting exams for the students of class 10 and class 12, CBSE also conducts All India Engineering Entrance Examination and All India Pre Medical Test. Both of these are national level entrance exams and are a rage amongst students. However, the one initiative that has emerged a continuous success year after year is the ‘CBSE Helpline’. CBSE Helpline was introduced a few years back and since then counsellors at CBSE Helpline are working hard to keep up with the queries of the students. These counsellors at CBSE Helpline address queries regarding the course curriculum, help students deal with exam related stress, provide moral support and encouragement etc.

Plans are in the pipeline to make CBSE an international board on the lines of IB and Cambridge International Examinations. Soon CBSE as an international board will also focus on students from other countries who are planning to pursue their higher studies in India.

In order to ensure timely completion of CBSE syllabus, students should set for themselves daily and weekly targets and regularly review their performance.
